The bill you never added up

Your number is wrong. The one you give for what this used to cost you. It's way too small. That's the counter price, the one you could defend out loud. It skips every cost that dodged a receipt. The cigarettes billed you in all the places they knew you'd never look. The real bill runs a lot longer.

It's like finding one ant in the kitchen. There's always a whole line of them behind the wall. The late night store runs, plus whatever else jumped into the basket. The gear you bought twice because the first one vanished. Whatever you bought to cover it up. None of it looked like part of smoking. All of it was.

A bigger bill means a bigger refund. If the true cost ran far past your number, what's coming back runs far past it too. Most of it arrives with no announcement. Things stop needing replacing. Money stops leaking out the side. God's refunding the whole bill, not just the counter price. You stop paying to undo what you already paid to do.

Tonight, give it ten honest minutes and one sheet of paper. Your old number goes at the top. Every cost it hid goes underneath. You're not on trial here. You were being farmed, not being foolish. Then fold the page and keep it close. On a hard day, it'll argue for you better than anyone.
