The audience went home
Who was watching the first time? Maybe a crowd behind the school. Maybe a party where you were the last one holding out. Maybe just one friend you wanted to impress. Your hands didn't even know how to hold a cigarette yet. Most first times aren't about the feeling. They're an audition.
And you got the part. Then everyone went home. Most of them forgot that night by morning and moved on to their own lives and their own mistakes. Nobody from that crowd is still in the seats. The show kept running anyway. Same lines, same prop, empty room. And the cigarette kept charging you for the lights.
Ever seen an actor on the late bus, still in full stage makeup? Everyone on board can tell. He's the only one who forgot it's a costume. Quitting is the washcloth. What's underneath might feel plain at first, a little exposed. That's the face the people who love you kept hoping to see.
Next time an urge shows up wearing your personality, ask it who this is for. Then look out at the seats. Empty. God saw you before the first cigarette and every day since. He never needed the costume to know who you are. The makeup's coming off, and the face underneath was always the lead.
