Becoming free

The appointment you intend to keep

You've already said yes to an invitation nobody's sent yet. A wedding. A graduation. A grandkid's first day of school, backpack way too big. Maybe a friend's fiftieth. You can see yourself there, near the back during the toast. Not sick, not ducking out early to smoke. Just there, on an ordinary good day.

Showing up isn't a hope. It's a purchase. You're paying for it right now in installments, on days that have nothing to do with parties. The cigarette had its own payment plan going, billing your future one ordinary day at a time. Every day without it, you buy a little of that future back. No ceremony. Just payments that count.

That's why the count of days matters more than how any single one feels. Nobody buys a future in one heroic afternoon. You buy it in payments that look too small until you add them up. Tell God where you're hoping to stand. Lord, I want to be in that room. Then live like someone who expects to get there.

Put it on a card. Tape it inside a cabinet door you open every day. Just the person and roughly the year. Not a quote. An appointment. On the hard days you won't have to argue with yourself about the benefits. You'll open the cabinet and see the card. You've got somewhere to be.
