Becoming free

That old photo isn't news

You're scrolling, minding your own business, and your phone digs up an old photo nobody asked for. Shame pulls that trick too. The money. The broken promises. The things you did back then. It serves them up like they happened this morning.

Shame claims it keeps you safe. Remember how bad you were, it says, and you'll stay good. But shame never guarded anything. Feel awful, reach for a cigarette, feel worse, repeat. The cigarette ran on your shame and charged you for every tank.

You didn't get free by hating who you were. You got free by refusing to be that anymore. Mercy did what contempt never could. And God doesn't keep the old record in a drawer beside your new life. He moved it as far as the east is from the west.

When an old scene pops up, treat it like that photo. Look at it honestly. Name it. That happened, it's paid, and that's not who's standing here. Some scenes will still sting. A sting isn't a sentence. Then keep scrolling. Paid means paid. You owe that picture nothing.
