Somebody's uncle lived to ninety

Say health and somebody's uncle suddenly lived to ninety. Say money and they'll offer to cover it tonight. That's what happens when a cigarette gets held out and you start explaining. You meant well. You wanted them to get it. But every reason you hand over comes with a handle.

A handle is made for grabbing. Set an argument on the table and people pick it up and push, because that's what arguments are for. You didn't want a debate. You built one and gave them the first turn. Then it rides home with you. At midnight you're still arguing with an uncle you've never met.

The cigarette had you convinced a no needs a lawyer. A no never needed one. Nobody at that table is owed the full story. Two words will do. No thanks. No apology after it. No nervous laugh asking them to be fine with it. Two words give them nothing to grab.

Breathe a word upward before you walk in. You know my reasons. That's enough. He does, and He's walking in with you. Then, when the offer comes, say the two words and let the silence run a beat longer than feels polite. Somebody will fill it. Somebody always does. The way home is quiet, and every minute of it is yours.
