Same no, different price

Two people at a wedding table get offered the same thing. Both say no thanks, same easy tone, same second. From across the room they look identical. Under the table, one of them is twisting a napkin into a rope. They pictured it, weighed the night, and paid for that no. The other one spent nothing at all.

Give it a season and the gap shows. The first person has said no over and over, drawing from an account that empties fast on hard days. They're paying for a decision that never gets cheaper. The second person stopped making that decision a long time ago. They've been busy living. Only one of them is at risk on a rotten Tuesday.

If there's still an argument inside you, you're the first person today. That's information, not failure. The cigarette ran up that bill on purpose, so every no would feel like a sacrifice. But a case repeated enough runs out of new material. God is patient with the stage you're in. He's growing the second person right out of the first.

Ten minutes after the next offer, check where your head went. The food? The music? Whoever just made you laugh? If it's already moved on, something underneath shifted while you were busy watching the effort. Score it by how fast you forgot, not by how hard the no was. The no you can't even remember is your best one yet.
