One won't hurt, right?
"Come on. One won't hurt." Someone leans across a good dinner, half smiling, and says you've clearly proved your point. Your chest tightens. Your mouth starts loading the whole speech, the brain chemistry, the slippery first one, the closing argument. Now the whole evening tilts around one sentence.
Look at who's talking. That line is almost never about you. People say it with one in their hand, or a week after their own attempt fell apart. Your steady choice is a mirror they didn't ask for. They're checking out loud whether their own choice still holds.
A debate hands a settled question a second round. Reopen it often enough and it starts to feel undecided, even to you on the way home. Treat it like a bill you already paid. The cigarette always quotes a price of one and mails the bill for more. You're not paying twice because someone waves the envelope. I don't smoke. So, how's the new place?
Then move on and mean it. The change of subject is the message. Nothing to argue with means nothing to argue about, and a table follows whoever's calmest. Be warm and easy and free right in front of them. That does more than any speech could. This one's settled between you and God, and He's holding it steady. The table doesn't get a vote. Pass the bread.
