Becoming free

One sentence, no footnotes

Someone asks a yes or no question and you answer with a documentary. How bad it got. What it cost you. The morning it turned. How long it's been. Every word is true, and none of it is shameful. But every telling seats the old you at the head of the table.

You tell it because it feels like proof. Without the before, the after looks unearned. So you narrate the worst chapter of your life on demand, to people who asked a one word question. Someone who's never touched it just says no thanks, and the talk moves on. Their no comes without footnotes.

A story told this often doesn't fade. It hardens. It's like passing around the scan of a bone that's already knitting. The cigarette already ate whole chapters of your life. It doesn't get your small talk too. You can honor the road you came down. God's building you a life that isn't a museum of it.

Keep one sentence and let it stand alone. When the full documentary starts loading, stop after line one and take a sip of whatever's in your hand. If someone truly wants the history, you can give it. It's just not the price of admission anymore. No thanks, I'm good. That's the whole story now.
