Becoming free

Nobody's tapping your shoulder now

There's a version of your mind you've barely met. It lives past the point where you always used to break off. Somewhere in the middle of the hard part, the tap would come. Time to smoke. Or at least time to think about it. You called it a break. It was a summons.

Deep focus works like water coming to a boil. The first stretch is just heat going in, and nothing seems to happen. The cigarette took the pot off the heat right as it started to bubble. Then you'd sit back down and wonder why you were starting from cold. Your focus was fine. It kept getting interrupted.

That summons is gone. You can stay with one hard thing for as long as it takes. More hours of scattered work just buys more scattered work. An unbroken block buys something else. The idea that finally connects. The page that sounds like you. The plan with all its pieces in view. Whatever God has put in your hands to build, you can build it deep now.

Give it one real run today. One task. Phone off and shut in a drawer. A two hour timer. The first twenty minutes will itch, because your body remembers being called away. Stay put and let the itch get bored of you. When the timer goes, look at what you made. Meet the version of you that stays.
