Becoming free

Nobody plans on forever

Ask anyone still hooked when they plan to stop. Most people won't say never. You'll get a condition. After the wedding. After this project. When things calm down. Most people holding a cigarette have a later clause tucked away. It might be the most common sentence in the whole business.

Which means most of them aren't choosing that life at all. They've already decided to leave. They're hitting snooze. After this month. After the holidays. The alarm keeps ringing and each reason renews itself right on time. The decision is made. Only the date keeps sliding.

You weren't someone who loved it and defended it on the merits. You'd already agreed to leave, and you kept renegotiating the time. The cigarette never once accepted a date. There was always a reason this month wasn't the month. Stress. A trip. A bad stretch. A good stretch. That's how it keeps people who already want out.

What you did wasn't radical. You held the same plan most people hold, and you finally got out of bed on it. God sat through every snooze with you, patient, and He was there when your feet hit the floor. Mark the day you started somewhere you'll see it, like a birthday. Everybody plans to get up. You got up.
