No plot twist this weekend

Somewhere on your calendar sits a wedding, a birthday, or a cookout. Think about it and notice what's fading. The rehearsing. The escape plan for when somebody offers. The dread about the part of the night when it usually comes out. You know what you'll do there, the same way you know you won't pocket the host's silverware. There's no suspense left in it.

That fading dread is what you've been working toward, and it leaves without an announcement. Self trust isn't a surge of confidence. It's duller than that. It's knowing ahead of time what you'll do, and then watching yourself do it. You can predict yourself again.

The old way was a guessing game. You'd promise yourself something on Friday. Then you'd wait until Saturday night to find out if it was true. The cigarette turned your own evenings into cliffhangers. Living next to someone you can't predict is exhausting, and that someone was you. There was nowhere to go for a break. That tiredness is lifting, and it's leaving without a sound.

At the next one, catch yourself in the moment you already saw coming. Somebody offers, you pass, the conversation keeps rolling. Enjoy how boring that is. God has been steady with you through all of it, and some of that steadiness is rubbing off. Walk in, hug the host, grab a plate. No plot twist. Just someone you can count on.
