Becoming free
Going back would need a checklist
Step one, decide. Step two, find the money. Step three, a counter under fluorescent lights, or a text to someone you'd rather not text. Step four, somewhere to smoke where the wrong person won't walk in. Step five, a story for whoever asks. Going back isn't a slide. It's a project with steps.
You've been reading the map upside down. Freedom looked like the uphill road, and going back looked like an easy slide. The cigarette always posed as the easy option, while it kept you planning, spending, hiding and covering. Now count the steps. Staying free tonight takes zero.
Being braced all day costs something. It keeps you tired, and it keeps the old road on your map. Nobody stands watch over a street they've stopped walking down. Some of the watching can end. Not because you're careless. Because the thing you watched for now needs a shopping trip. God's been carrying more of this than you know. You're allowed to feel some ease.
Skip the bracing when the thought drifts in. Walk it through the whole errand in your head instead. The money. The trip. The hiding place. The story you'd tell after. Let it get tedious. Boredom protects you better than fear ever did. Going back is a project. You've got better projects now.
