Becoming free

Go back to the spot

What do you do with a date this big? A whole year. A party feels like a stunt. Letting it slide feels like pretending it cost nothing. So plenty of people give it a private nod, then wonder later why it felt like a missed chance. A year free deserves more than a nod.

The word anniversary sounds like graduation, and graduates stop going to class. A year isn't a discharge. It's a record. Twelve months of mornings that were yours. Back then, the cigarette skimmed a cut off every day. This year it got nothing. The day is for reading that record, not closing it.

Go stand where day one happened. The kitchen at two in the morning. The bed where sleep wouldn't come. The hallway you paced. Give it two minutes. Remember how slow the hours were and what scared you most. Then notice who's standing there now. Same spot. Different person.

Before you walk away, say one sentence to God. You carried me out of here. I'm not going back. Thanks for the year behind you, because you didn't carry it alone. A promise for the one ahead. Then go have a wonderfully ordinary evening. The proof it worked? Tomorrow doesn't have to be special.
