Get ready for the quiet question

One of these nights, someone's going to hang back. Everyone's reaching for their coats, and one friend is still sitting there, turning an empty cup in their hands. Then the real question, low and quick. How did you do it? They'll ask once. They won't ask at all if a lecture looks likely. You'll have about thirty seconds, so get ready now.

They've been watching you longer than you think. The cigarettes swore to you that people like you don't get out. Somebody near you is hearing that same lie right now. Warnings rarely move anyone. What moves people is someone they know, no stronger than they are, standing there free. You're that someone now.

Write your answer while you're calm. Three sentences. What helped. What you believed that turned out false. What you'd tell yourself on the second day. Keep the hard parts in, because polished answers sound fake. Say it once out loud in the shower. A ready answer sounds humble. An improvised one drifts into a sermon.

When the moment comes, keep it short and warm. Tell them what you did. Tell them it's open to them too. Offer to pick up the phone any hour. Then let it rest, because their timing belongs to them and God. He put you within reach of someone who's going to need exactly you. Someone's going to ask me how. I'm ready.
