Becoming free

Everyone got the same letter

Other people can quit. You're different. You really need it. That line saves itself for your good days, when the usual excuses stop landing. It sounds personal. It sounds like it studied you. It feels like the one truth nobody else could understand.

You know the junk mail with your name printed on the envelope? You've been specially selected. Your whole street got the same one. That voice is a form letter. The cigarette mailed that exact line to every person it ever held. Same hooks. Same wiring. And it loses to you the same way it lost to them.

The people walking around free today weren't made of tougher stuff. Plenty of them heard that letter read aloud in their own heads. They just stopped opening it. God didn't make you the one person freedom skips. The same hand that walked them out is holding yours. Nothing about you is disqualified.

Next time the letter shows up, mark it return to sender. Then say out loud one urge you already outlasted, one evening you got through anyway. That's not a theory. It's your record, and nobody else's name is on it. I'm not the exception. I'm the next one out.
