Diagnosed by nobody, believed by you

Diagnosis: addictive personality. Signed by: nobody. Maybe an aunt said it over dessert. Maybe a friend meant it kindly. Maybe you said it first, as a joke that stopped being funny. You've lived inside that sentence ever since, and never asked who ran the test.

Check when the evidence was gathered. While nicotine had hold of you. That's grading someone's swimming while a rip current drags them out. Of course you looked like someone who couldn't let go. The cigarette rigged the test, then let you wear the grade. That grade says nothing about your character.

The label hangs around because it's useful. It explains defeats before they happen. If it's your personality, it's permanent. If it's permanent, tomorrow's hard night isn't a choice. It's a symptom showing up on time. A description that predicts your surrender is an instruction in disguise.

Hand it back, stamped unproven. You don't have to win the whole case. Just stop serving the sentence. Next time it comes up, from anyone, answer it. That was a guess. I've got newer information. God never put a defect at the center of you, and He's been with you through every hour of this. You are the newer information.
