Calm, or just careless?
"I could stand out there with them and be totally fine." The thought arrives with no drama. No craving in it. It sounds like a fact from someone who hasn't struggled in a while. And maybe it's true. Real confidence and carelessness wearing its clothes feel the same from the inside. Both feel like calm.
The feeling can't sort them. Your behavior can. Confidence is the absence of wanting. Standing out there is uneventful, like a bakery to someone who just ate. Carelessness is wanting plus a story about having earned an exception. The cigarette loves that story. It forges your signature on the permission slip.
Two questions do it. Did I go toward it, or did it come to me? Confidence handles what shows up and forgets it. Choosing the route, the seat, or the company is an appointment being booked. Then ask if this is a fact or a plan. Facts carry no details. A thought with a time, a place, and a way to get one attached isn't confidence. That's logistics.
Run both questions now, while it's calm. If it's confidence, checking cost you nothing. Enjoy the day. If it's the other one, you caught it at the thinking stage, the cheapest place to catch anything. Change the route or tell one person who knows you. God sees through that story in a heartbeat. Ask Him to lend you His eyes. Give me an honest look at this one. I'm confident enough to check.
