A note from ten years out
Hey. It's me, ten years on. I remember today better than you'd guess. Not the hard part. I couldn't even tell you what it was. What I remember is that nothing about the day looked historic, and I got through it anyway. From here, the getting through looks a lot smaller than it felt.
You want me to say it was worth it. It was, just not how you're picturing it. There was no morning of arrival. No day I woke up finished. It just stopped being something I had to think about. The best news I've got is that I hardly think about it at all.
You're treating this week like a verdict on your character. It isn't. The cigarette dressed up every ordinary day as a final exam, and it was bluffing. The days I owe most are the ones where nothing happened and I didn't go back. God was there in all of them, carrying more than I noticed. Plain days are what I'm made of.
One instruction, and it's plain. Do today. Leave the rest alone. You don't have to feel strong or believe in all ten years right now. Get to tonight without smoking, sleep, and do it again tomorrow. I'm here because you kept doing that on days you swore didn't count. They counted. Signed, you.
