Beating cravings
The five-minute contract
Don't decide about forever right now. Forever is heavy, and a craving loves to put forever on the table — 'can you really do this for the rest of your life?' You don't have to answer that question today. Sign a smaller contract: five minutes.
For five minutes, you're not going to smoke. That's the whole deal. Anyone can do five minutes — you've waited longer for a kettle. And here's what the craving doesn't tell you: it can't survive the wait. It peaks and falls on a clock of its own, usually before your five minutes are even up.
If it's still loud when the time's up, sign another one. Five more minutes. You're allowed to get through this hour in pieces — free people don't win by being unbreakable, they win by breaking the fight into pieces small enough to win.
And each little contract you keep is real evidence: you're someone who does what they said for five minutes at a time. String those together, with God's help, and that's just called freedom — built the only way anything real gets built. One small kept promise after another.
