Beating cravings

Ride this one out

Right now there's an urge, and it feels urgent — like it'll keep climbing until you give in. It won't. A craving is a wave, not a tide. It rises, peaks within three to five minutes, and falls back down on its own, whether or not you smoke. You've ridden out dozens already. This is just one more wave, and you already know how it ends.

Here's the part the urge doesn't want you to notice: it's lying to you. It whispers that a cigarette will fix this feeling. But the feeling IS the cigarette — it's the last one's grip loosening. Give in and you don't get relief; you get a fresh craving in an hour, and the cage stays locked. Wait it out and the craving doesn't just pass — it gets a little weaker for next time.

You don't have to white-knuckle this alone. Take a slow breath. Ask God for one minute of strength — just one — and use it. The strength to wait was given to you; you only have to spend it. Put your hands somewhere, drink some water, step outside. Let the wave move through you instead of obeying it.

When it passes — and it will — notice what just happened: you wanted a cigarette and you didn't reach for one. That's not deprivation. That's a free person, doing what free people do. Stay with it. You're almost through.
