Beating cravings

That discomfort is the addiction dying

It's tempting to read a strong craving as a sign something's wrong — that you're missing out, that you need it. Flip it. That restless, itchy feeling is the sound of the addiction losing. It's the trap rattling the bars because you stopped feeding it. Every minute you don't give in, it gets a little weaker and you get a little freer.

Nobody who never touched nicotine walks around craving it. That craving isn't a need you were born with — it was installed, one cigarette at a time, and it can be uninstalled the same way: by not feeding it. What feels like a loss is actually the un-hooking happening in real time.

So you're not 'going without' something good. You're sitting through the withdrawal of something that was quietly taking from you — your money, your breath, your sense of being in charge of yourself. This discomfort is temporary. What it buys you is permanent.

Breathe. Thank God you get to be on this side of it — the side that's healing, not the side that's still owned. Let the craving do its loud, dying thing. You don't have to do anything but let it pass.
