Beating cravings
Give your hands somewhere to go
Part of what's pulling at you right now isn't nicotine at all — it's choreography. Your hands made the same motion thousands of times, and they miss the routine more than your body misses the drug. That's good news, because a routine can be replaced tonight; a chemical need can't.
So give your hands a job. Hold a cold glass of water and drink it slowly. Wash the dishes. Step outside and put your palms flat on something solid. It sounds too simple to work, which is exactly why nobody tries it — but the urge is running on autopilot, and autopilot is easy to interrupt once you do literally anything else with your body.
While your hands are busy, let your head do one thing: a short, honest prayer. Not eloquent — honest. 'God, hold me steady for five minutes.' That's a complete prayer, and five minutes is longer than most cravings live.
By the time the glass is empty or the dishes are done, check back in on the urge. It will be smaller than you left it — because it was never a command, just a habit knocking on the door. You don't have to answer. You just did something better instead.
