Beating cravings

Rebellion pointed the wrong way

You do not like being managed. You never have. So the urge stops asking politely and appeals to that instead: you are a grown adult, nobody tells you what to do, not the people at home, not a program, not an app on your phone. It borrows the one part of you that will not be pushed around and aims it squarely at your own decision. And it feels good, because defiance always does. That is exactly why it is such a useful thing to steal.

But count the parties actually issuing orders in this minute. Not the people who love you. Not the app. The only thing in the room giving an instruction is the one telling you to smoke. It has a time it wants, a place, a specific act, and it will not take no without a long argument about it. Your own decision did none of that. Your own decision asked you once, a while back, and has been waiting quietly ever since.

So the rebellion is aimed backwards. Doing what the craving says is not defiance, it is obedience with better branding. For years it set your schedule for you: when you could leave the house, how long a flight could be, which people you stepped away from and precisely when. That is not what freedom looks like from any angle. That is a boss you never interviewed, and the only reason it passes for independence is that it taught you to call compliance a choice.

Point it the right way. The defiant move right now is the refusal. Not being good, not doing as you are told, not compliance with a program. Somebody inside your head is making a demand, and you are going to decline it the way you have declined every other thing that tried to run your life. Ask God for the backbone you already have plenty of, and spend it in the correct direction. Belonging to nobody is the whole point. Start here.
