Beating cravings

'Just one' is a door, not a visit

The thought sounds so reasonable: just one. One cigarette, take the edge off, back to normal tomorrow. But look at it squarely — you've run this experiment before. Was it ever one? 'Just one' isn't a small purchase. It's a subscription that renews itself.

Here's why it can't be one: the first cigarette doesn't end the wanting — it reinstalls it. Within hours the nicotine is leaving your body again, and the same discomfort that's whispering to you now comes back with a receipt: 'you did it yesterday, why not today?' One isn't a visit to the old life. It's the door back into it, and the door swings shut behind you.

So be precise about what's actually on offer. Not 'one cigarette.' The real offer is: all of them — the morning ones, the guilty ones, the money, the cough, the self-disgust, the whole cage — starting with this one. Seen clearly, it's not tempting. It's just the trap, wearing its best suit.

You don't need it, and deeper down you don't even want it — you want relief, and relief is already coming on its own as this wave passes. Stand still. Ask God to hold the door shut with you. It only takes one 'no' to keep all of this — everything you've built stays yours.
