Hard days
Comfort that does not cost money
You need comforting today and every door you would normally open has a price on it. Not the good kind of tired, the kind where you want something to close over your head for an hour. Takeout is out. The drive is out. The thing you would have bought yourself is out. So you are sitting there with a real need and an empty set of options, and the mind starts scanning for the cheapest fast relief it has ever known. You know exactly what it lands on.
Here is the list it will not offer you, and this is not a consolation list. Heat: a shower hot enough to actually feel, or a blanket, or a mug held with both hands. Sleep, taken deliberately and early, which is the most underrated relief available to a human being. Sky: outside for ten minutes with your head genuinely up. A voice, meaning one person called rather than texted. Prayer, out loud and unpolished. Every one of those is free, and every one works on the actual nervous system.
Now compare them fairly. Of everything you have ever used to feel better, the one you paid for was the most expensive and the least effective. It never delivered comfort. It delivered the end of the discomfort it had created, which is a completely different product sold under the same name. A hot shower does not create the need for another hot shower in an hour. A cigarette does. That is the entire difference between them, and it is enormous.
So pick two things off that list tonight and actually do them, not as substitutes for what you wanted but as the real article. Warmth, then sleep. Sky, then a voice. Comfort was never the thing with a price tag on it, that was only the version somebody worked out how to sell you. God gives the good ones away. You are not going without tonight. You are being comforted for free, which is how it was always meant to work.
