Beating cravings

Change the room

Cravings are site-specific. They live in particular chairs, doorways, break spots, corners of the evening. Right now, some of what's pulling at you is simply the room you're standing in — the old stage, set for the old scene.

So walk off the stage. It sounds too small to matter, but the urge is fragile: it needs the props. Thirty steps — another room, the stairwell, outside under the actual sky — and the scene it was directing falls apart mid-line.

While you walk, look at something farther than a screen: the street, a tree, the horizon if you can get one. Wide vision, long distance, slow exhale — the body reads all of it as 'we left the situation', because you did.

You're not running away from anything real. You're declining a stage play written by an old master you no longer serve. God made the world much bigger than the smoking spot — go stand in a bigger piece of it until the wave breaks. It will break before you're even bored.
