Beating cravings
Your hand already knows the steps
Your hand has a move it knows better than your own signature. Reach. Lift. To your lips. Pause. Down. It runs without asking you. And right now it's firing with nothing at the end of it. Part of what you're calling a craving is that empty spot at the top of the motion. An unfinished move itches like a sneeze that won't come.
Keep the motion and change what's at the end of it. It sounds too easy. Try it anyway. The cigarette borrowed a move your hands learned from every cup and fork, then passed it off as a need. Your hands never cared what they were holding. They just want the move finished.
Grab something right now that your hand can bring to your mouth. A cinnamon stick. A straw cut in half. A toothpick. A pretzel rod with some crunch. Run the old loop with it, slow, as many times as you want. Finish the motion and a lot of the itch goes with it.
Do it every time the reach shows up today. You're not white knuckling this. You're giving your hands honest work while the wanting runs down on its own. Your hands are learning a new ending, and God's patient with them while they learn. They get to keep the dance. The cigarette just lost its spot in it.
