Beating cravings
Write the answer before it asks
When you lose one of these arguments, the reason is usually boring. You're writing your reply while the urge is still talking. Worn out, on the spot, against lines it has polished to a shine. Of course it takes a round now and then. Your conviction isn't thin. You've been showing up to a rehearsed debate with no notes.
Pilots don't write the emergency checklist during the emergency. They write it on the ground, on a calm day. When trouble hits, they read it and act. The cigarette got to rehearse on you until every line was smooth. Now you get a script of your own.
Start yours right now. Typing one sentence gives your hands a job and your head something besides the debate. Open the notes on your phone and write it plain. I don't do that anymore. Or a name you love. Or four words to God. Short enough to say with a tight chest. Pin it to the top and read it once, slowly.
Tomorrow, on a calm minute, read it again and keep it. Then use the same line every time, word for word. A line you rewrite each time is just more negotiating. A line you settled on a calm day holds on a rough one. Ask God to keep the words steady when your heart isn't in them. You answered. The answer stands.
