Beating cravings
Who said today's ruined?
Drop one plate and you sweep it up. Nobody grabs the rest of the stack and smashes those too. Yet that's exactly what the urge is proposing right now. You slept through the alarm. Or you snapped at someone. Or you ate the thing you swore off. Day's ruined, it says, so smash the rest.
It sounds like honest math. It's rigged. It prices the whole day off one bad hour. A day isn't one plate. It's a stack of hours, and plenty of them haven't happened yet. The broken one can't reach forward and crack the rest. The cigarette blows one stumble up into a verdict, because a person who feels like a failure reaches for it faster.
Start taking it back right now. Pick one small surface near you and clear it. The sink. Your desk. The nightstand. Two minutes, start to finish. Wipe it down if there's a cloth handy. Now today has one clean spot in it, and you made it.
Look at the clock and count what's left. Every hour of it is still yours. You don't have to rescue all of it. Put one plain good thing in the next hour. A walk. A real meal. A message to someone who likes you. Take it to God one hour at a time. Just this hour, Lord. Hold it with me. Tonight you won't remember the bad hour. You'll remember the turn.
