Beating cravings

What your hand keeps reaching for

Your hand just went to your pocket. No thought, no decision. It reached, found nothing, and came back empty. That's barely a craving. Anyone who's moved house knows the feeling. You keep slapping the wall where the old light switch used to be. Your hand never got the news.

Plenty of what feels like an urge is an unfinished motion. The reach wants to land on something. When it closes on air, that gap feels like wanting. The cigarette trained your own hand to fetch for it. Give the reach somewhere else to land.

Find something right now and put it in that pocket. A smooth stone. A coin. A folded card with one line in your handwriting. Reach in and squeeze it hard. Your hand finishes the trip and closes on something real. The loop shuts, and the craving loses its cover.

Put it in the same pocket every morning, before you're fully awake. If you pick the card, write a line to God on it. These hands are Yours now. Keep at it, and one day your hand will reach, close on the stone, and you won't even notice. Squeeze it once more right now. That's a habit changing hands.
