Beating cravings
What the second drink steals
Alcohol removes one tiny thing: the half second between wanting and reaching. That little gap where you notice, weigh it, and choose. A couple of drinks in, the gap closes. Your reasons are all still there. You just lose the room to use them.
The cigarette counted on that. It always made its best sales around eleven. Watch for the little crowd that drifts toward the side door about then. Much of the pull you'll feel is the group moving, not nicotine. The smart work happens now, while the gap is wide and still yours. Clear-headed you makes tonight's calls.
One move, before the first drink. Set an alarm for the minute you're leaving. Label it something you'll be glad to read at that hour. "Home free." "Proud tomorrow." Then tell one person the time out loud. The midnight version of you won't have to decide a thing. It just follows the alarm.
On the way in, hand the night to God in one quiet line. Keep me clear tonight, and get me home. Then go. Eat, laugh, tell the long story, stay for the good part. Everything that matters tonight is already settled. Go have the night you came for, and wake up with all of it.
