Beating cravings

The urge showed up with a plan

"Step out for five. Clear your head. Come back sharp." That's the urge talking, and it sounds smart because the deadline is sitting on your chest. It doesn't arrive as a craving. It arrives as a plan. And part of the plan is true. You really did feel better after those breaks.

Take that break apart. You stood up after sitting too long. You changed rooms, and the air changed with it. Your eyes finally looked at something farther than arm's length. You breathed slow and deep for once. None of that needed a cigarette. It tagged along and signed its name to your clear head.

Keep the break and leave the cigarette out of it. Go to the nearest window and find the farthest thing you can see. A rooftop, a tree line, a crane, a cloud. Hold your eyes there for thirty slow counts. Give your eyes some distance and your head follows.

Then ask God for the right thing. Give me steady, not fast. Sit down and start with the smallest piece. One line. One step. This gets finished tonight or tomorrow and forgotten within a month. You'll hit this deadline either way, and today you'll hit it owing nothing.
