Beating cravings

The thumb moves first

Run the last ten seconds back. Your thumb found the phone. The screen lit up. A few scrolls in, the wanting showed up like it came from nowhere. It came from the screen. Those two were trained together, one hand scrolling, the other holding a cigarette. They still travel as a pair. The unlock is the cue.

What was the scrolling for, anyway? Not news. It was a way out of the room without getting up. The cigarette was that same exit with a toll booth on it. Both are answers to a question you haven't asked out loud yet. Tired? Bored? Dodging one specific thing?

Right now, lock the screen, lay the phone face down, and go splash cold water on your face. No scroll for the road, no one last video. Staying put and waiting for the urge to change its mind is how it wins. Wet face, empty hands, nothing for it to hold.

Dry off slowly and look at the face in the mirror. Ask it the question underneath. God already knows the answer, and He'll help you hear it. It's usually small. A nap. A snack. A call to someone you miss. Pick the phone up later if you want. It'll still be there. The urge won't.
