Beating cravings

The prediction already failed

The whole craving rests on one claim. 'You can't sit in this feeling without a cigarette.' It rarely says it that plainly, because said plainly it wouldn't last a minute around you. It hides under the other arguments instead. Pull that one claim out and the rest falls down.

Check it against the clock. How long has this been going on? Five minutes? Twenty? That's exactly how long you've been taking it, on your own, while it argued you couldn't. It's someone shouting that you can't swim while you tread water in the deep end. The prediction got tested while it was talking, and it failed.

Every hard hour you ever got through with a cigarette nearby, it signed its name at the bottom. It's been taking credit for your strength. The only open question now is how long, and an urge this loud can't hold that volume long. Set a five minute timer right now. Hold until it rings.

No lifetime vow. No need to feel better first. Just the minutes you've already stacked, plus five. That strength didn't appear from nowhere. God put it in you long ago, and you've been spending it since the urge began. You're not waiting to become someone who can do this. You've been doing it all along.
