Beating cravings

The number reset. You didn't.

It's all gone anyway. Write off the rest of today. That thought showed up fast, didn't it? The counter jumped back to the start, and your head wants the whole day to follow it. The slip isn't the danger. It took a few minutes, and it's over. The story you tell about it is what turns one into a hundred.

A counter can subtract one date from another. That's its whole skill. It has no record of the mornings you woke up and didn't reach for a cigarette. No column for the urge at eleven at night that you outlasted in the dark. That one cigarette wants to walk off with all of it. It can't.

Reset a step counter and your legs still walked every mile. Every urge you outlasted taught your brain something, and one slip doesn't erase that. Now one move, this minute. Anything left goes in the trash, bag tied, out the door. Nothing left? Even better. Keep it that way, and one slip stays one.

Then give God the short version. I fell. I'm getting up. Walk with me. He saw every day that counter missed, and He doesn't grade you by a number. Let the screen say one. You've added days before, and you know how. Today isn't written off. You just took it back.
