Beating cravings

The emptiest offer in the building

Boredom is a letter with no address on it. Whoever grabs it first gets to answer. You've checked your phone twice and the fridge once, and nothing sounds good. Then one thought shows up sounding like the only idea in the building. It isn't a craving for nicotine. It's a request for anything at all.

Look at what that thought is offering. A few minutes of the same old motions. A tidy little ending to nothing at all. The cigarette never entertained you once. It just stood nearest the door. Boredom can't tell available from good. You're not missing fun. You're missing a default.

Answer the letter first. Put on one loud song and sing it, badly, start to finish. Hum if people are around. Tap the beat on the counter. Your whole body is restless, so give your whole body the job. Three minutes of bad singing is a real answer.

Part of this flatness may be your brain recalibrating, learning to make its own rewards again. That's worth waiting for. Small things start landing. A good song. A long talk. A walk with nowhere to be. God hands those back one at a time, and none of them come with a bill. You grabbed the letter first, and the urge got nothing.
