Beating cravings

The answer that made no sound

You did everything right. You stopped. You asked. You meant it as much as you can mean anything today. And nothing. No warmth, no lift, no settling in your chest. The urge is right where it was, with a new weight on top. The fear that you were talking to the ceiling.

Two things got glued together here, a feeling and an answer. The cigarette taught you that relief should hit fast and loud, because fast and loud was all it had to offer. So when help came in without a sound, you assumed it never came. Feeling nothing isn't the same as getting nothing.

God's help tends to arrive like a package left on the step. No knock. No doorbell. You find it later, when you notice you got through something. Set a ten minute timer right now. Ask again, as flat and numb as you feel, then let it run. Your only job is to be here, free, when it rings.

He isn't grading how well you prayed. No prayer gets thrown out on a technicality of mood. You aren't too numb to be heard. When the timer goes off, look at what you didn't do in those ten minutes. That was the answer, and it never needed to make a sound.
