Beating cravings

Somebody designed that wall for you

Look at where they put it. Not down an aisle you'd have to choose. On the wall right behind the register, lit up, right in your line of sight, while you stand still with your card out. It's the candy placed at a kid's eye level, moved up a few feet.

They built it for the three seconds your mind is busy with a card reader. Everything else in that store waits for you to go find it. That wall is the only thing in the building that comes looking for you. You're not weak at the counter. You're standing in a machine built to catch you there.

Win it before you reach the front. Pick where your eyes are going to go. The screen on the card reader. The cashier's face. Your own basket. Card ready. Say thanks and walk. Three seconds of somewhere else to look is the whole defense.

If that store keeps getting to you, buy your milk somewhere easier for a while. Nobody hands out medals for shopping in the hard place. Take your bag and head for the doors. God walks out with you, and all you're carrying is what you came for. Behind you, that wall is still lit up, selling to an empty spot on the floor.
