Beating cravings

Pray with half a heart

"I can't pray right now. I'd be lying." Part of you wants a cigarette badly, and asking God to keep you from it feels like a performance. You're too honest to perform. So you go silent and pace the room alone. Alone and wordless is exactly how the craving likes you.

God isn't waiting for you to want the right thing first. You're allowed to come as split as you are. The rule that says you need a clean heart before you speak? It didn't come from Him. The cigarette forged that rule to keep you from asking.

Stop pacing. Sit down, turn both hands palm up, and say the true version out loud. Part of me wants this. I'm asking You anyway. That's a whole prayer. It's the only honest one on offer right now. That makes it the right one.

A divided prayer is you taking the side that wants freedom and lending it your voice while the other side is still shouting. That's no act. It's a choice made out loud, right when it costs something. He's heard halfhearted prayers since long before you showed up, and He leans in to every one. Half a heart, said out loud, just outvoted the craving.
