Beating cravings
Leave the room it lives in
Cravings have favorite chairs. The left side of the couch. The edge of the bed. That same spot outside the door. Some of this pull is just the place you're standing in. The urge knows its old seat, and it's been waiting there for you.
The cigarette took over those spots and started acting like it paid rent. It never paid a cent. You covered all of it. Your money, your evenings, your favorite seat in your own home. A squatter only has power inside the room it took. Step out, and it's got nothing to lean on.
Go to a different room right now, and take the long way there. The hallway, the bathroom, the stairwell, outside if you can. Once you arrive, look at the farthest thing in view. God made a lot more world than that one seat. Go stand in some of it.
Stay there until the urge peaks and passes. That's minutes, not hours, and it's got less to work with in here. When you head back, sit somewhere new, just to make the point. The chair's yours again. The squatter's out.
