Beating cravings
Keep every minute of your break
It isn't nicotine you're scared of losing. It's the fifteen minutes. The propped door. The same three faces. The same patch of pavement. The one stretch of the shift when nobody needs a thing from you. That break is worth protecting, and you get to keep it.
The break and the habit got welded together, but they were never the same thing. One is rest. The other moved into the middle of your rest and started acting like it paid the rent. The cigarette didn't give you those fifteen minutes. Your shift did.
So take the whole break. Same door, same people, same pavement. Your hands and mouth might feel lost out there, so give them a job. Grab something crunchy before you head out. An apple. A bag of pretzels. Baby carrots. Walk out there chewing, and let the break be a break.
Say nothing about it. Nobody's getting an announcement, you're just on break. Strange is the whole cost, and strange wears off. A place gets rewritten by what you keep doing there. Rest was God's idea first, and He's handing you this one whole. Go take your break. Every last minute of it belongs to you.
