Beating cravings

It needs you sitting still

Five. Four. Three. Two. One. Up. Out of the chair before this sentence ends. The dangerous part of an urge isn't the wanting. It's the stillness. Sitting is where the negotiating happens. Reason after reason, exception after exception. Every second you stay parked, its case gets better written.

A count works like a starting gun. It fires whether you feel ready or not. Nobody on the start line checks their mood first. They hear the bang and go. The cigarette loved catching you sitting down. That's where it did its best talking. Take away the stillness and it loses half its script.

Now give your body a job. Ten pushups on the floor, or twenty against the wall. Feel your heart pick up and your eyes land somewhere new. Now the urge has to chase someone who's already moving, and it's slow on its feet. God gave you a body that moves on a decision faster than your mind can argue. Use the fast part of you.

Keep the count ready for next time. The first reason shows up, and you skip the reply. You count. Five to one, and you're up before it finishes its first sentence. It works on good days and rotten ones, because it asks nothing of your mood. Let the argument keep talking to an empty chair.
