Beating cravings

It always finds a big day

Of course it picked today. A birthday or a funeral. A win or a loss. A Friday that felt earned. Today's different, and maybe it is. The excuse writes itself from there. Not a normal day, so the normal answer doesn't apply. The day didn't make the offer. The offer went looking for a day.

Look down the next twelve months. There's no month without an occasion in it. Weddings, hard anniversaries, holidays, a Tuesday that goes bad enough to count. Circle every one and the whole calendar turns red. An exception that fits every week is a schedule.

And the cigarette never made one gathering better. It just kept pulling you to the edge of them, a few minutes at a time. Get to the middle of the room, not the edge of it. Find something to carry. Plates, chairs, coats, a tray of cups. Stay where the day is happening.

The urge will peak and pass in a few minutes, like every one before it. Nobody at that table will know except you and God, and He's in that room with you. You'll be there for all of it, the stories, the long hugs, the goodbyes at the end. This time you get the whole day.
