Beating cravings
Finished. Now it wants paying.
Ever notice it waits until the hard part's over? Not the middle. The end. The email sends. The last plate hits the rack. The laptop clicks shut. Then a small blank opens up and your hand starts moving. This urge isn't hooked to stress. It's hooked to endings.
Your brain keeps a payment scheduled at every finish line. That part's healthy. Wanting a reward after effort is how people keep doing hard things. The fake part was the currency. Every cigarette built the tension, then charged you to let it out. You were paying yourself with your own money and calling it a bonus.
Pay yourself for real, and do it now. Put on one song you love and let it play all the way through. Loud if you can. Sing along badly if nobody's around. Name it in your head as the payment. That one was for finishing. Timing beats size. A reward four hours late is only a memory.
By the last chorus, the pull has usually faded. That ache at the finish line was never the enemy. It was just aimed at the wrong thing. Aim it at music, at rest, at a long call with someone you like. God hands out rewards like those, and none of them come with a bill. That's a bonus you get to keep.
