Beating cravings

Don't reason with a frozen screen

Your shoulders are up by your ears. Your breath's stuck high in your chest. Your jaw's chewing on nothing. A craving isn't only a thought. It's a whole body state. And that means you can break it without winning a single argument in your head.

When a screen freezes, you don't reason with it. You hold the button and restart it. Your body takes a restart too. Right now it's stuck on an emergency program. The cigarette always hijacked that alarm and dressed it up as a need. You can reboot without it.

Run cold water over your wrists for thirty seconds. Then splash your face, twice. Let the cold jolt you. It cuts straight into the program. While the water runs, give God one honest line. Slow me down, Lord. That's a whole prayer, and it's enough.

Dry off. Drop your shoulders on purpose and let your breath sink back into your belly. No debate, no willpower contest, no speech. You restarted the system, and the craving got left behind on the frozen screen. You beat it with a sink and four words.
