Becoming free

White knuckles to open hands

There are two ways to hold a free day. Clenched — teeth gritted, counting the hours, guarding the streak like a man carrying water through a desert. Or open — the same day, held with something closer to gratitude. Same facts, same freedom. But one of them is exhausting, and the exhausted version of you is the one the trap waits for.

Here's the shift: stop guarding what you *gave up* and start noticing what you *got back*. Breath that comes easy. Money that stays put. A mind that isn't checking the clock for its next appointment with a cigarette. List them — actually list them — and the day changes shape: not a test you might fail, but a gift you're already holding.

This is what gratitude is actually *for*. It's not a nicety; it's load-bearing. A person defending a loss eventually gets tired of defending. A person thanking God for a gift doesn't set the gift on fire. You cannot simultaneously feel deprived and grateful — and you get to choose which one to practice.

So today, hold it with open hands. Say thank you — out loud, to Him — for one specific thing freedom gave back this week. Watch how much lighter the same streak feels when you carry it that way. You were never meant to white-knuckle a blessing.
