The dentist appointment you can keep

A dental office somewhere still has your name in an old file. You rescheduled once for a real reason, then again for a made up one, and then you simply stopped booking, and years went by. It was never about the drill. It was about sitting in a chair with your mouth open while a stranger reads years of smoking off your teeth, and then the kind talk, and then the pamphlet. Easier to have a toothache than to be told the truth by a professional.

Here is what has changed while you were not looking. Gums that were inflamed for years settle down once the daily insult stops. Bleeding when you brush becomes not bleeding when you brush. The stains lift with one cleaning. The appointment shrinks back into being an appointment. Somebody looks in your mouth for ten minutes, says almost nothing interesting, and sends you home. A boring visit to the dentist is a trophy. You just have to show up to collect it.

Notice the shape of what was really going on, because it was never only teeth. There was a whole list of things you avoided because you already knew what you would be told. The checkup. The blood test. The conversation with your father. Avoidance is expensive and invisible, and it was one more room the habit was renting in your life without ever appearing on the bill. You have been quietly moving out of those rooms for months without calling it that.

So book it. Not this month, today, from your phone, before you finish your coffee, the appointment you have been putting off the longest. Take whatever they tell you, including anything you have to fix, because a thing you are fixing is not a thing you are hiding from. And ask God for the small courage it takes to be examined. You are not walking in there with a secret anymore. For the first time in years, the news is on your side.
