Someone only knows this version

There is a person in your life who has never once seen you smoke. Maybe you met them this year at work, maybe they married into the family, maybe they are small and only recently learned your name. When they picture you, the picture contains none of it. No stepping outside. No pocket check. No particular smell on a coat. They do not know they are missing anything, because from where they stand, nothing is missing at all.

Your instinct is to treat their version as the incomplete one. They only know the edited you, you think, the one with a chapter torn out, and if they knew the rest they would adjust the picture downward. Turn that around. They are not looking at a partial portrait. They are looking at a current one. You are the one carrying an old file and treating it as the master copy, quietly correcting every stranger who happens to have you right.

History and identity are not the same thing. Your history includes the years, and nothing erases them, and they are not a secret you have to guard. But history is what you did. Identity is what you do. The new person in your life is not being fooled, they are simply meeting the version that exists now, without the extra weight you insist on carrying into the room. Their picture is not generous. It is accurate. They are describing today, which is the only thing anyone actually lives in.

Try this the next time you are with them. Let their version stand. Do not add the footnote, do not confess the history as a disclaimer, do not hand them the old file so they can revise you downward. Just be the person they already see, for one evening, and notice how little effort it takes. God is not working from the old file either. He deals with people as they are today and calls that fair. You are allowed to do the same for yourself.
