Becoming free
Nobody at that table is resisting
At the next table you sit around, pick out the people who never started. You know which ones. Now ask what those people are doing today in order to stay free of it. Not this year. Today. They aren't counting anything. They aren't white knuckling through the gap between courses. There's no plan running underneath the conversation, no strategy, no quiet effort being spent. The honest answer is that they're doing nothing at all, and it costs them nothing to keep doing nothing tomorrow.
That matters because of the picture in your head about the rest of your life. Most people quitting imagine a long corridor of restraint. Decades of saying no. Someone at a wedding at seventy, still gritting their teeth about it. That isn't the destination. That's the hallway. The destination is the person across the table who hasn't thought about this once all evening, who couldn't tell you the last time it crossed their mind, and who isn't remarkable in any way for it.
The gap between you and them is smaller than it feels from here, and it's made of time rather than character. Desire runs on belief and repetition. Stop feeding both and the thing thins out, not to zero on a schedule anybody can promise you, but far enough that most days ask nothing of you at all. What feels like effort right now is the crossing, and crossings end. You aren't signing up for a lifetime of resisting. You're walking toward an ordinary life plenty of people already have.
So stop measuring your whole future against today, because today has weather in it. Borrow the posture of the person who never started instead. It's available to you and it's mostly just not participating. No debate, no negotiation, nothing to defend to anybody. They aren't stronger than you. They simply never took the loan out. You're paying yours off, and paid off is paid off. Sit at the table tonight like someone who doesn't smoke, because you don't.
