Confident is not the same as careless

The thought arrived without any drama at all. I could stand out there with them and be completely fine. And you probably could. It did not feel like a craving, it felt like a fact, delivered in the calm voice of somebody who has not struggled in months. Nothing in it announced itself as risk. That is the entire difficulty with this one. Settled confidence and carelessness wearing its clothes produce the identical sensation from the inside, which is a mild, pleasant certainty that you are fine.

So stop trying to read the feeling, because the feeling does not know. Confidence is the absence of wanting. There is nothing pulling, so being near it is genuinely uneventful, the way a bakery is uneventful to a person who is not hungry. Carelessness is wanting, plus a story about having earned an exception. The wanting is low and quiet and mostly out of view, and the story does all of the talking. Both come out of your mouth as the same four words. You will not sort this out by introspection. You sort it by looking at your behavior.

Two questions do it. First: did I go toward it, or did it come toward me? Confidence does not arrange things. It handles what shows up and then forgets about it. If you find yourself choosing the route, the seat, the company, that is not ease, that is an appointment being made without your permission. Second: is the thought a fact or a plan? A fact has no details attached. If it came with a time, a place, or a quiet answer to where you would even get one, that is not confidence. That is logistics.

Whichever answer you get, today is workable. If it was confidence, you have lost nothing by checking. Notice it, be quietly glad, get on with your day. If it was the other one, there is no emergency and nothing to be ashamed of, because you caught it at the thinking stage, which is the cheapest stage there is. Do one small thing: change the route, or say the sentence to one person who knows you. Ask God for the honesty to see which one this is. Checking is not doubt. It is how confident people stay confident.
